Google February 5, 2026 Discover Algorithm Update

Google has announced a critical update for Discover, one of the biggest traffic sources for news websites. The “February 2026 Discover Update“, which went into effect on February 5, introduced significant changes to how the system operates.

As the TE Bilişim technical team, we reviewed the details for you. The picture is clear: Google is pushing back sites that attract readers with misleading headlines, while supporting qualified publishers who provide real value. Here are the details of the update and our notes for the Turkish internet media ecosystem:

1. A New Era for Local Publishing

With this update, Google has taken the “locality” criterion — which it has emphasized for a long time — one step further. User data confirms that people prefer to follow developments in their own country and region from publishers within that geography.

With the new update, Google will now reward content that genuinely makes users feel “this was worth reading“, rather than content designed to mislead them.

2. No More “Clickbait”

The warning bells are ringing for exaggerated headlines and visuals that mislead readers or are unrelated to the content. Google clearly stated that this update will significantly reduce the visibility of clickbait websites. It is no longer enough to bring users to your site — you must keep them engaged and satisfied. “Shocking news” style journalism is being replaced by “clear and accurate information” sources.

3. Not Generalists, but Experts Will Win

This is the most critical point of the update: Topical Authority.

Google summarizes the situation as follows: “You may be a cinema website. If you suddenly publish a single article about gardening, we would not consider you an expert in that topic. However, even if you are a local news site, if you maintain a consistent and in-depth ‘Agriculture/Gardening‘ section, we recognize your authority in that field.”

In other words, the Google update will now rank and highlight content based not on the overall authority of a news site, but on the site’s subject-matter expertise. News websites that focus on their areas of specialization — or that cover categories in depth even within general publishing — will take their place in Discover accordingly.

The Update Is Coming for News Websites in Türkiye

Google has currently launched this update for U.S. and English-language content. However, our experience shows that this update will reach Türkiye within a few weeks. The current period is a “preparation phase” for publishers in Türkiye. Those who do not want to lose traffic must start following these rules now.

What TE Bilişim Recommends to Avoid Traffic Loss

Based on the joint analysis of our software and SEO departments, we recommend the following to help you emerge stronger from this process:

Be honest in your headlines: Creating curiosity is part of journalism, yes — but you must deliver on the promise made in the headline within the content. Do not mislead users. Based on our previous experience, we know that Google algorithms can penalize a site for spam even because of a single article that says “Date Announced” in the headline without providing the date in the content.

Strengthen your categories: What areas is your site strong in? Economy, sports, technology? Focus on those areas. Instead of only publishing agency news, include expert analysis in those topics.

Avoid duplication: Originality is no longer optional — it is mandatory. Produce your news content by adding your own interpretation and perspective.

With the February 5, 2026 Discover update, publishers who produce quality work can move forward with confidence. Clickbait, misleading content, and unfair competition in news publishing will be penalized. As TE Bilişim, we continue to maintain and update the technical SEO requirements (speed, Core Web Vitals, etc.) of our news software infrastructure at the highest standards.

Focus on the quality of your content — we are with you on the technical side.
